Grading and walls in College Grove
We’ve built retaining walls and drainage in College Grove. It’s unincorporated Williamson County, so the county’s permit is the one to know.
What have you done in College Grove?
Retaining walls and drainage, which we posted about on Facebook in 2026. The two go together on a slope, because a wall with no way for water to get out is a wall we’ll be back to replace. Our retaining wall order is the same anywhere: excavation, compacted base, drainage, stone backfill, reinforcement and final grading.
Which permit applies out here?
College Grove isn’t a city, so it falls to Williamson County. The county’s policy requires a Land Disturbance Permit for “greater than one (1) acre” of disturbance, for less if it’s part of a larger common plan, and for “ten thousand (10,000) square feet or greater of impervious surface.” Review costs $150. Questions go to the County Engineer at 615-790-5809. At 1 acre, the state’s TNR100000 construction stormwater permit applies as well.
What about a barn or a long driveway?
Both come up on acreage, and they count. A barn roof, a slab and a long drive can add up to 10,000 square feet faster than you’d guess, even with the disturbed area under an acre. Add up everything planned, including what you’re building later.
The pad itself is routine for us. We’ve brought a barn site roughly 5 feet out of grade up to a compacted surface, working through a substantial amount of rock. Building pads go in as 1-foot lifts rolled in, and the slope gets checked with a laser as they come up. Long driveways are handled the same way, on a narrower footprint.
How far out are you?
College Grove is 18 miles from Brentwood in a straight line, down the east side of Williamson County, with Arrington at 13.9 on the way and Eagleville at 21.4 past it. Send a picture of the slope or the site, along with roughly how many acres you have.

College Grove questions
Who issues grading permits in College Grove, TN?
Williamson County, since College Grove is unincorporated. A Land Disturbance Permit is required above 1 acre, for smaller work inside a larger common plan, or for 10,000 square feet or more of new impervious surface. The county charges $150 to look it over, and the County Engineer’s number is 615-790-5809.
Have you worked in College Grove before?
Yes, we’ve built retaining walls and drainage in College Grove, and we said so on Facebook in 2026. It’s 18 miles from Brentwood by straight line. If you have a slope out there that’s moving or holding water, send a picture of it, and the estimate is free.
Can you build a barn pad in College Grove?
Yes, barn pads are regular work for us, and open acreage suits them. A pad like the one we did for Laura R. starts by finding how far out of grade the site sits, hers was roughly 5 feet, and then building it up in rolled lifts.
Does a large driveway count toward the Williamson County permit?
It can. The county’s policy counts 10,000 square feet or more of impervious surface as a trigger, and that surface includes a long gravel or paved drive added to roofs and a barn slab. On a rural lot, add up everything planned, even if you’re building it in phases.
