Land clearing and stump removal

Trees, stumps, brush and rock off the ground, whether it’s one dangerous tree or a whole lot headed for a pad.

What does tree and stump removal cost?

Our tree and branch removal flyer lists these prices:

  • $750 for large trees
  • $1,500 for a bucket lift or hard access
  • $500 for stump grinding
  • Branch and brush haul-off included

Storm damage and dangerous trees are on the same flyer. Clearing a lot is priced differently, by the acre and what’s on it, so send a picture from the road and one from the back of the property.

Grinding the stump, or digging it out?

It depends on what comes next. Grinding is quick and leaves the roots to rot, which is fine under a lawn. Where a pad, wall or driveway is going in, the whole root ball comes out with the excavator, because roots left under fill decay and leave a soft spot under whatever you built. The pile of boulders and stumps on some of our lots is what that looks like at scale.

When does forestry mulching make sense?

On overgrown ground you just want open again. A mulcher turns brush and small trees into a layer on the surface, with nothing to haul or burn. On a building site, the organic layer has to come off anyway, so we’d clear it conventionally.

What rules apply to clearing?

Franklin wants an approved plan or a tree removal permit, except on lots of 1 acre or less not marked critical. Thompson’s Station requires its Grading Permit before tree removal or site prep, and tree protection zones stay up for the whole project. In unincorporated Williamson County, clearing more than 1 acre calls for the Land Disturbance Permit.

Burning takes a state permit from October 15 to May 15, free through BurnSafeTN and good only for the day it’s issued. Local rules can override it. Most homeowners would rather have the brush hauled off.

Land Clearing and Stump Removal: common questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Nashville?

Our tree and branch removal flyer lists stump grinding at $500. It lists large trees at $750, and bucket lift or hard-access trees at $1,500, with branch and brush haul-off included. Send a picture of what you have, because a lot with many stumps gets priced as a clearing job.

What do you do after a tree stump is removed?

The hole gets backfilled and compacted so it doesn’t settle later, and then the surface is graded to match. If a pad or driveway is going over the spot, that fill goes in with the rest of the lifts. Roots left in the ground rot and leave soft places behind.

Do I need a permit to clear land in Franklin, TN?

Tree removal in Franklin needs an approved plan or a tree removal permit, though lots of 1 acre or less that are not marked critical are exempt. Clearing more than 1 acre in unincorporated Williamson County falls under the county’s Land Disturbance Permit. We check which applies before starting.

Can you burn brush when clearing land in Tennessee?

Yes, with a burn permit from October 15 to May 15. The permit is free from BurnSafeTN.org or 877-350-2876, good only for the day issued, and the state says it covers contractors clearing land. Local rules can override it, and hauling the brush off avoids the question.

Do you handle storm damage and dangerous trees?

Yes, storm damage and dangerous trees are on our removal flyer, along with a bucket lift for trees a machine can’t safely reach, listed at $1,500. Send a picture of how the tree sits and what it’s leaning toward so we can tell you what it will take.

Is forestry mulching an option for clearing a wooded lot?

Yes, forestry mulching is one of the clearing methods we list. It chews brush and small trees in place and leaves the material on the ground, so there’s less to haul. It suits overgrown ground better than a building site, where the organic layer has to come off before fill goes in.
